new funding opportunity is available from the Veterans, Seniors, and Human Services Levy (VSHSL) to fund one or more entities to assist low-income or disabled individuals in making initial applications and appeals for federal and state income-generating benefits and programs.

Not everyone can work or work full-time to provide household income. Federal and state programs provide several income-generating benefits for qualifying households that can increase household income and promote financial and housing stability.

Examples of such benefits and programs include disability compensation or pension benefits administered by the federal VA, unemployment, Social Security Benefits, or health insurance coverage.

Multiple barriers stand in the way of accessing some of these state and federal benefits, including learning about their availability and eligibility criteria, understanding the application process, collecting necessary documentation, and remaining in communication with the federal or state government during what can be an extraordinarily long application process.

Funding overview

Funded programs must:

  • Employ subject matter experts who understand the needs and concerns of communities eligible for public benefits, and the benefit eligibility criteria and application process itself.
  • Conduct Outreach to Eligible Populations to inform of the availability and eligibility requirements of government benefits.
  • Assist with Benefit Applications and Appeals to ensure submission of complete and accurate applications, thereby increasing the individual’s likelihood of receiving government benefits.
  • Provide Referrals to Community Based Services to help individuals learn about and access other community services that can promote financial stability, housing stability, healthy living, and social engagement.
