National Recovery Month works to grow a thriving recovery community, reduce mental health and substance use related stigma, and spread the message that behavioral health recovery is REAL (Restoring Every Aspect of Life).
This Recovery Month, we are highlighting the work of the King County Behavioral Health Advisory Board (BHAB).
BHAB members advise the King County Executive and County Council on mental health and substance use education, prevention, treatment, crisis response, and regional service delivery.
“In 2025, we have opened more treatment facilities, expanded crisis teams and services, launched new programs that make getting medication for opioid use disorder easier, and more,” said Susan McLaughlin, Director, King County Behavioral Health and Recovery Division. “Our BHAB members have dedicated their experience and time–every month–guiding us through this incredible progress as well as challenges. Their service helps make recovery possible every day for more people in King County.”
BHAB members promote treatment and recovery services that help King County residents access the building blocks needed to live healthy, happy, independent lives and reach their full potential. These building blocks are Health, Home, Purpose, and Community and are Recovery Month’s weekly themes:
Health: Making informed choices that support whole health and wellbeing
Home: A stable and safe place to live
Purpose: Meaningful daily activities, such as employment, school, volunteering, or creative endeavors
Community: Relationships and social networks that provide support, friendship, love, and hope
In honor of Recovery Month, we invite you to:
- Reflect upon and promote weekly themes,
- Share the message that recovery is REAL (Restoring Every Aspect of Life), and
- Utilize the resources and tools in SAMHSAs Recovery Month toolkit to promote recovery and wellness activities in your community.
We also invite King County residents who are interested in volunteering on the Behavioral Health Advisory Board to attend upcoming meetings and apply. The Board is actively recruiting members in South and East King County, including individuals and family members with lived experience. You can learn more about the Board and membership by visiting the BHAB webpage or emailing bhrdbhabboard@kingcounty.gov.
